ABSTRACT

Highly skilled performances result from long-term practice. For example, expert musicians who have practiced intensively for a long time demonstrate highly stable and impressive performances. A key concept of motor learning is “automatization,” the process by which a performance becomes stable and effortless following repeated practice (Fitts & Posner, 1967). In cognitive psychology, the concept of automatization has been introduced as a working hypothesis. In this paper, we describe automatization as an emergent property of a nonlinear dynamical system.
