ABSTRACT

Sharon (“Sherry”) E. Nichols is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In 1998, she and Deborah Tippins initiated collaborative research with colleagues at WVSU in the Philippines. She teaches elementary and secondary science teacher “methods,” technology, sociocultural issues in teaching, and qualitative research courses for undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests include culturally relevant pedagogy, reflective “tools” for science teacher learning, narrative inquiry, and post-structuralist feminist pedagogy and research. She is currently exploring ways to extend notions of community-based science education developed from her work in the Philippines, in a local resegregated school community of Alabama. Her family nickname, “the yard child,” is fitting as she is most likely to be found gardening or swimming when not working at the university campus.
