ABSTRACT

An analysis of the economy of Algeria today is bound to be fragmentary. Statistics cover only a few of the principal events which have taken place since 1959 and 1960, the last years for which comprehensive data are available. In the course of the last few years fundamental changes have taken place in the whole Algerian society. Thus, although a fairly exact picture of the Algerian economy in 1959 or even 1960 can be drawn, a picture of Algeria today can contain quantitative assessments of only some of the fundamental aspects of the economic structure of the country; for others only qualitative descriptions are possible.
