ABSTRACT
These languages have attracted comparatively little study by outsiders; they have remained until recently the vehicles of an oral, unwritten tradition only. Thus when we refer to a language as 'hitherto little known' or as being 'discovered' we think, of course, of formal, recorded knowledge by the national or international community at large, not to the instinctive knowledge which a speaker has of his own mother tongue.
