ABSTRACT

I had less than two months to make my submission to this book concerning philosophical foundations for experiential education. I was paddling alone one evening on Smoke Lake, in Algonquin Park, in Canada’s canoe country. Hearing a loon call is not uncommon, but it is always special. Still, this evening, in the blackness of a moonless, starry night, I heard loon calls-many of them, all at once-and they sent a chill down my spine and swell of joy to my spirit. In such moments, I regularly turn to Sigurd Olson and Paul Shepard for guidance towards comprehension. Together they have helped acknowledge and advance the magic of such moments. Together they have helped me co-learn in such moments with students. I hope to share a sampling of their value to experiential education in this chapter.
