ABSTRACT
Psychiatric history hovers, like a threatening shadow, over much of contemporary mental health practice. The past fifty years has witnessed much tinkering with the language of ‘mental health’ and ‘mental illness’, both in terms of definitions of the phenomena associated with ‘madness’ and the kind of responses needed, in the name of care and treatment.
