ABSTRACT
In my home town in the early 1950s, the few people who had ‘nervous breakdowns’ usually were dispatched to a ‘mental hospital’ 40 miles away. Few thought of them as ‘psychiatric patients’ and no one had any idea what kind of ‘psychiatric treatment’ they received. Some disappeared for months while others were never seen or heard of again.
