ABSTRACT

Teaching is a relatively easy concept to defi ne: teaching is acting so as deliberately and directly to facilitate learning. While what is done to achieve the purpose of teaching may be almost infi nitely diverse, it is the purpose of these activities, not the activities themselves, which is defi nitive. Similarly, teaching of important kinds is undertaken in many different contexts and by many people in diverse roles. The concept of teaching has no implications for where or by whom teaching is done. It is only the purpose of the activity, that of facilitating learning, that is crucial to the defi nition.
