ABSTRACT

This book draws on our experiences as teachers, curriculum developers, technology designers, and researchers. For the past ten years we have been working together, merging our interests and expertise in social studies education (Mark) and literacy education (James), to develop web-based curricula and tools to guide teachers and students to become more vigilant and critical readers and writers of web-based texts. Each of us has worn a number of hats in doing this work-classroom teacher, researcher, teacher educator, consultant, professional development coordinator, and university-school liaison, to name the most prominent ones-and we have been fortunate to learn a great deal with and from a wide range of students and teachers across grade levels (elementary through graduate school) and contexts (classrooms in Indiana, Michigan, Taiwan, and Singapore).
