ABSTRACT

In recent years, economic performance in these countries has at best stagnated, if not worsened. From 1970 to 1979, real gross domestic product increased at an annual average rate of 3.1%. Real per capita GDP, on the other hand, rose by only 0.7% during the same period, owing to a population growth rate of 2.4% per annum. This past trend does not augur well for the development prospects of the LLDCs, unless serious measures are adopted to deal with the bleak economic and social situation prevailing in these countries.
