ABSTRACT

Introduction In the age of global terrorism and high-profile attacks such as 9/11, 7/7, Mumbai, etc. there is a particular interest from business, government, military, law-enforcement, and academics in the tactics utilised by terrorist groups/cells. There are different beliefs as to why groups choose or adopt a certain strategy and specific tactics. These often focus on the resources available to the group, the acquired skill-set from a specific environment or operational theatre, or a favoured tactic based on the desired consequences or outcome (e.g. Drake, 1998; Dolnik, 2007). Often no one belief alone is true, as there are usually a multitude of factors that contribute to the use of a certain tactic, as this chapter aims to demonstrate.
