ABSTRACT

Press freedom is the materialisation of the sovereignty of the people, which is based on the principles of democracy, justice and the supremacy of the law, and has to be upheld in society with respect to the provision of information, education and entertainment, and to facilitate social control.1 The impact of media watch movements can already be felt. The people are aware of their rights and responsibilities as media consumers. Those who have been disadvantaged are no longer hiding with their anger repressed. They use the right of reply or the right to correction.2
