ABSTRACT
A glance through the contents of the leading philosophy of sport journals reveals that the area of primary interest and work is the fi eld of ethics. This part explores what light can be shed on the enterprise of sport by the discipline of theological ethics, which we defi ne as any ethical position or argument that makes theistic assumptions. In the West this includes, of course, Christian ethics (dominated by Divine Command Theory), but is not limited to it, since each of the major ethical theories has a theological version (Paley’s utilitarianism, Aquinas’ natural law theory, the virtue ethics of both Aristotle and MacIntyre, etc.).
