ABSTRACT

Afifteenth-century bishop sits at his desk, pen poised, looking out the window (Figure 27.1). An other-worldly light – yet a light resembling the radiance of the evening sun – circulates within the interior where, among the artful clutter, one sees objects that fascinate and engage the senses: in the background, books, astrolabes, and works of sculpture; in the foreground, other instruments of measure – an hourglass and an armillary sphere – and musical manuscripts. Who, we might ask, is this scholarly person?
