ABSTRACT
Understanding the role that assessment plays in early childhood education is a complex process. In the fi eld of early childhood there are diverse contexts in which children learn and develop as well as a multiplicity of reasons for assessing them. The early childhood education focus of this chapter will be on prekindergarten through third grade, as issues related to assessment during infancy and the toddler years bring with them special considerations that are beyond the scope of this chapter.
