ABSTRACT

The characteristics of the turbulent horseshoe vortex wrapping around a wall-mounted body were investigated experimentally by application of the high resolution Digital Particle Image Velocimetry technique. Three levels of Reynolds numbers based on the bulk approach velocity and the obstacle diameter were studied: 26,000, 48,000 and 117,500. Through a comparative evaluation of time-averaged flow parameters, we elucidated the dominant features of junction flows. Moreover, we performed basic statistical analysis for the values of fluctuating velocity components. Our results show that the flow is exhibiting Reynolds-number dependency and they provide a new basis for evaluating findings from previous studies.
