ABSTRACT

This chapter will attempt to describe a model of the production process as it has developed in the narrative film of live action in most commercial cinemas. I will discuss the tools and techniques of each phase of production and how they contribute to the structures and meanings of the story. Because I am focusing on the dominant model of narrative cinema, I will not directly address other modes of filmmaking (Chapters 6, 7, and 8 on experimental, documentary, and animated cinemas take up questions of production methods specific to those modes).
