ABSTRACT
In September of 2009, Trafigura, a Dutch oil trading company with additional offices in Great Britain, settled a lawsuit brought against it by the people of Abidjan, the main city of the Ivory Coast. The suit alleged that hundreds of tons of waste dumped by the company around the city caused nausea, headaches, vomiting, violent rashes, and even death among thousands of people living near the dump sites. The company denied legal liability, and claimed that the waste was not toxic, but it also agreed to pay out 197 million US dollars.
