ABSTRACT

This case study is of an infant school in a rural location on the outskirts of a small village with approximately 170 pupils on roll. The school has an RAF base nearby and a number of pupils are from families that live on or near the airbase. There is an element of instability within the school community as a result of comings and goings of families that are stationed at the local airbase for a relatively short period of time. Some of the pupils in the school have fathers who are commissioned abroad in dangerous or threatening situations. This instability, potential fear and the sense of loss that some children experience is of concern to the staff of the school. The school aims to provide a stable and secure environment for the pupils to support pupils’ sense of wellbeing and to provide positive learning experiences.
