ABSTRACT

Lineage of Industry Studies As a branch of empirical research, industry studies attempt to analyze various problems of the times impinging upon industry, We have a considerable accumulation of such studies. Even before World War II there were outstanding works on agriculture, cotton textiles, and other industries. For instance, Minoru Toyosaki’s Nihon Kikai Kogyo no Kiso Kozo [The basic structure of Japan’s machine industry] (Nihon Hyoron Sha) is a classic in industrial research. Prewar industry studies have a special characteristic in that they went down to the industry level to analyze the reproduction structure of Japanese capitalism. In particular, Toyosaki concluded from his research on the machine industry that Japan would be unable to survive a long-term war. It is a distinguished book written under conditions of severe repression of thought.
