Intellectual property is not a strange concept in African countries outside of South Africa. South Africa has at all relevant times had a modern intellectual property law system, and has been continuously amending its intellectual property legislation to align it with international developments and best practice. Like South Africa most African countries do have laws that protect intellectual property. However, almost all these laws are remnants from their colonial past and are outdated.
