ABSTRACT

Let us now revert to the example which I gave, of the agrarian problem in Japan under the rule of the Tokugawa.

Let us in an effort to discover what is fundamental and what is incidental, what is ‘typical’ and what is ‘specific,’ take a look at the agrarian problem in another country in a comparable period. I choose the history of England because it is the most familiar to me and also because the general similarity of conditions in the two countries-two island countries it must be remembered-the general similarity gives a favourable basis for comparison.
