ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION During my work on a research project with Janet Beavin Bavelas, I discovered that microanalyzing therapy videotapes had several functions. Microanalysis, a type of analysis developed by Bavelas, is a “close examination of actual communication sequences” (Bavelas, McGee, Phillips, & Routledge, 2000, p. 47). I quickly discovered that this type of analysis could be used as a tool for trainers, especially SFBT trainers. Because SFBT values the importance of language in therapy, microanalysis seems to be a perfect medium for training trainees in the model.
