ABSTRACT

New information technology does not act like a bullet shot to a predictable trajectory. Neither does it behave like a tablet of dye dropped into a glass of water, bound to diffuse and color it to its own image. But it would be equally wrong to say that technology cannot diffuse into society, or that it makes no sense to try to track or anticipate its trajectory. The case analyses in this book have elaborated on the hard and varied work that accompanies whatever diffusion is to happen and whatever next turns are achieved in the trajectory of new technology. Indeed, these and many other registers need work, both in the sense that they need to be worked on further and in the sense that they need to better incorporate work done to orient ongoing technology projects and increase our academic understanding.
