THE CATHOLIC-REPUBLICAN CONFLICT No realistic assessment of the importance of Christian Democracy in France can be made without reference to the conflict between Church and State which plagued France from the Revolution of 1789 until the Debré Educational Reforms of 1959. And, even today, the scars have not finally disappeared.
