ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the evolution of a multi-site professional development school during its fi rst 2 years. This initiative began as a pilot project intended to improve the quality of the fi eld experiences offered at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). At the inception of this project, it was not clear how we would move away from a traditional conception of school-university relationships. Our lack of a clear vision for specifi c outcomes in a multi-site professional development school caused us to place particular emphasis on growing the PDS through a collaborative process. This chapter provides a narrative of the journey, describes the resulting organization, and discusses the lessons we learned.
