ABSTRACT

We describe an early literacy monitoring system designed in collaboration with multiple education stakeholders aimed at redressing low literacy rates among children in Kindergarten to Grade 2. We fi rst describe the monitoring system and how the need and design for the system evolved through an extensive consultation with our research partners. Then we discuss the more signifi cant benefi ts of engaging in large-scale and longitudinal study collaborations. The chapter concludes by examining critical challenges and lessons learned about developing, implementing, and sustaining a long-term innovation aimed at modifying practice at the K-2 grade levels.
