ABSTRACT
The translation of law has played an important part in the contact between different peoples and different cultures in history, and is playing an even more important role in our increasingly globalised world with the demand for legal translation on the increase. It is commonly acknowledged that legal translation is complex and that it requires special skills, knowledge and experience on the part of the translator to produce such translation. This chapter outlines the key concepts and issues involved in legal translation, in particular the practical aspects of translating law with an analysis of different types of legal texts, including private legal documents, domestic statutes and multilateral legal instruments.
