ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ten pearls of wisdom for general practitioners (GPs) for better understanding of gynaecology-related problems and for more efficient use of resources. These pearls have been acquired from years of experience and evidence-based study by specialists in the field. Lichen sclerosus (LS) and vulval intra-epithelial neoplasia (VIN) can both present with vulval itching/discomfort and are associated with a long-term risk of vulval squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), so examination of patients with these symptoms is important. Ovarian cancer is relatively uncommon, whereas its typical symptoms are very common. No wonder that patients and their families frequently complain of long delays in diagnosis. The chapter also presents advice on diagnoses often overlooked by GPs while examining women. Diagnoses of the following diseases/disorders are recommended: painful bladder syndrome (PBS), endometriosis, pudendal nerve entrapment, actinomyces, and intra-uterine contraception. The chapter provides guidance on how to distinguish tricky differentials and finally a few tips on prescribing medications for these patients.
