ABSTRACT

Austria’s accession to the European Union had an important impact on regional development and regional policies in Austria. Both the implementation of the Structural Funds framework and adaptation to EU competition policies had major repercussions on the political system in Austria, particularly with respect to the organisational framework of Austria’s regional policy. This chapter attempts to show how the characteristics of Austria’s regional policy have changed, which coherent or even distinct domains of the policy approach between the Austrian and the EU framework exist, which important changes occurred and – last but not least – which tasks are still open for the future.
