ABSTRACT
Looking back to my behaviour after my return I see now that my uncertainty as to my role was expressed … by an excitement and a garrulousness concerning the Lugbara, whom I discussed avidly with anyone whom I met and was willing to listen to me. They were ‘my people’, the object of an intense personal experience which I was willing to interpret to others although not totally willing to share with them.
