Dear Grotowski: An open letter
Dear Jerzy Grotowski: I won't say I know exactly what theatre is but I know that it is
something in the whole community's network of communications. What is your theatre? How does it relate to your environment, the Poland of 1969? There is little of Karl Marx in your theatre, but then there isn't all that much Karl Marx in your Communist Party, is there? So is your theatre a retreat to old Catholic Poland? Your published disclaimer of belief in God doesn't prove it isn't. The Church has reality for you, whether God does or not; a disproportionate degree of reality, even. Your slogan as a director would seem to be: when in doubt, fall back on ritual. And even the Church never went so far as to believe that in ritual there was salvation.
