Introduction: Lisa Wolford
WORKCENTER OF JERZY GROTOWSKI "Art as vehicle" is a practical work developed since 1986 at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski, sponsored by the Centro per la Sperimentazione e la Ricerca Teatrale (CSRT) in Pontedera, Italy.' The Workcenter does not create public productions, nor is it an "acting school" in any conventional sense of the term. The artists accepted for residence at the Workcenter, selected either yearly or every two years from among hundreds of applicants throughout the world, must commit to a minimum of one year of intensive research, working six days a week, eight or more hours each day. The past and present members of the research groups represent a wide array of cultural backgrounds, and have included artists from Israel, India, Turkey, and Singapore, as well as from throughout Europe and the Americas.
