Overthepastdecadetherehasbeenarapidandsubstantialrestructuringof teachers'workintheprimaryschool(Lawn1988;Pollardetal1994;Woods 1995).Thishasreceivedespecialimpetussince1988throughcentralgovernmentinitiativeswhichhaveintroducedamandatedcurriculumandassessment whilealsoradicallychangingthefundingandgovernanceofschools.Being ateacherinthemid-1990sincreasinglyinvolvesworkwhichliesbeyondthe classroom(Campbelletal1992).Ittakestheformsofplanning,administration,andsupervisionofcolleagues'work,andofinvolvementintheexternal relationsofmarketingandworkinandwiththecommunity.Asworkloads increase,intensificationisexperiencedbyteachersandthepressuresofwork erodetimeforreflectionandleisure(Apple1987;Hargreaves1994).With thishavecomenewconceptionsofwhat'goodteaching'constitutes.
