ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the notes that were written by the author in the course of a visit to Malacca and Pinang, in March, 1845. After a residence of some years in the island of Pinang, the author moved to the younger and more thriving settlement of Singapur. After two years of unremitted labour in Singapur, he employed that interval in a visit to Malacca for professional purposes, extending his voyage to Pinang. The notes were principally written on the spur of the moment for the amusement of distant friends. They may perhaps be found not to be wholly uninteresting to those who are desirous of becoming more familiarly acquainted with settlements in the Eastern Archipelago.
