Star Wars (1977) has been made to make film history, both positively, within its fan culture (Conrad 1996), and, more often negatively, among film critics. This one film has been engraved as an epitaph for classical Hollywood cinema by film historians (Mathews 1999) and discussed as a marker of merchandizing excess (Fleming 1996; Lukk 1997: 254).
