Islamic Activism in Egypt, 1974-1996
The title of the conference "Islam in a Changing World", and of this chapter confirm the interactive nature of the relation that exists between the world as a whole and each of the events and phenomena that together form the sum of its parts. Islam, or rather "Islamic activism", is the subject of concern here. It is affecting the world order, shaping it, and being affected by it. While the religion as a belief system is not the issue, its use as an idiom to express social malaise and discontent is causing quite a stir among the international community. This is evidenced over the past two decades by the abundance of literature which has emerged and the number of colloquiums that are being held to discuss the possibilities and modalities for a rapprochement between cultures and religions.
