The shape and mechanisms of the capitalist labour process as described by Marx long remained unchallenged in the Marxist system of thought, and existing socialist systems assumed this particular analysis of labour as a point of reference for all that is most evil in a production process based on exploitation. That evil side of the old societies was, however, according to a Marxist interpretation, also the highest expression of the capitalist phase of an inexorable evolution towards socialism, the role of which was to develop the forces of production.
