INTRODUCTION This paper is a survey of issues involved in the choice of school-language policies for nondominant language groups. The tenn "nondominant language group" refers to groups whose native languages are different from a country's:

• officiallanguage(s); • prestige language(s); • language(s) of wider communication; • language(s) of upward mobility; and/or • standard dialect.
