SCHOOL LIFE IN THE PERIPHERY In the middle of Guizhou Province, a mountainous state in the southwest of China, lies the county of Leigong Shan or Thunder God Mountain. The county is part of the region of Kaili, classified by the People's Republic of China as politically autonomous, because its population consists mostly of ethnic minorities (predominantly Miao). The Miaos of Kaili are cousins to those in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, sharing much with them in the way of language and culture.
