This chapter focuses on the use of a small group to assist men in a search for the maleness within themselves independent of the social expectations of male gender roles. The group was composed of male, helping professionals who saw themselves as responsive to feminism, believed they had begun to own and integrate their feminine aspects, but felt that something was missing. Group members were clearly aware of how men victimize women. To increase empathy they were encouraged to explore whether or not they ever viewed themselves as victims. They were reluctant to give or take ownership of physically violent feelings or behaviours. Most men have yet to find new channels for the energy and power which defines their essence of masculinity. The group members had considerable ambivalence about seeking out their hairy men. The positive aspect of the ambivalence was expressed by joining this expedition.
