ABSTRACT

48 One of the most common reflections at the end of participatory projects is that not enough time was spent thinking through and preparing for the process before it began. As a result, critical information was overlooked, important groups or individuals were left out, and major obstacles or opportunities were unforeseen.

Chapters 3 to 5 are intended to help organizers avoid this major problem. This chapter outlines the organizational framework and initial activities needed as a foundation for a participatory project. Additional activities may be necessary based on the specific needs of the young people you are working with, your organization, or other factors. Chapter 4 provides ideas on how to design a sequence of activities within a cohesive participation process, while Chapter 5 reviews some of the start-up activities needed to get the project under way.
