ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide some insight on the development, existence, and status of agricultural economics programs at the 1890 Land-Grant Institutions. It outlines the chronological evolution of one of the 1890 institutions. The inception dates of a program or degree offering in agricultural economics at some of the 1890 institutions are provided. T. N. Carver is recorded as teaching the first courses in agricultural economics at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard. A Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics is offered by 10 of the institutions; one in agribusiness is available at 7 of the institutions, with 3 institutions offering a concentration in agribusiness. Some faculty suggest that enrollment in agricultural economics continues to spiral upward, especially at places offering a concentration in agribusiness. Beginning the academic year 1951–1952, the bulletin listed the department in the School of Agriculture, offering a B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics.
