ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an experiment in developing problem-solving skills within a military domain. Specifically, an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) was developed for advanced training of field artillery officers in a crucial planning task for employment of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (rocket system). The term simulation refers to a representation of a real-world phenomenon for the purpose of training, analysis, or experimentation. Intelligent tutoring is a training technology that has matured and is effective if done properly. The most important aspect of an intelligent tutor is its manner of interaction with learners, teaching or assisting them in processing and understanding complex information. The conventional sand table exercise is a low-fidelity technique used to exercise the problem-solving skill during the emplacement task. The rocket system Virtual Sand Table (VST) is essentially a simulation in which the student's actions are evaluated against a set of expectations that are governed by a set of operational rules.
