ABSTRACT

This is the report of a research project that was designed to elucidate the chronology of an important part of the Early Anglo-Saxon Period. The Early Anglo-Saxon Period is defined as the archaeological period following the end of the Roman Imperial rule in Britain when the extensive zone in southern and eastern England characterized by an intrusive Germanic culture saw the regular inclusion of grave goods in human and burials. For practical reasons, this project was designed initially to try to establish a robust chronological framework for the period cAD 570-720; in the event, at the earlier end the results cover much more of the 6th century in detail, while at the later end the period as defined appears not to have continued into the 8th century as was formerly believed.
