ABSTRACT

As detailed in the previous chapter, one of the defining features of Mariane von Ziegler’s sacred cantata texts is their focus on Bible verses, as Ziegler incorporated biblical quotation into her cantatas more frequently than any other of Bach’s librettists. In Ziegler’s nine cantatas set by Bach, the texts of 13 of the 55 movements are Bible verses, with at least one Bible verse appearing in eight of the nine cantatas. But Ziegler’s treatment of biblical quotation is noteworthy not only in its frequency, but also for a particular type of Bible verse on which she focused: 11 of the 13 Bible verses record the divine voice, that is, the words of God or Jesus in biblical quotation, a text type commonly known as the Vox Christi. 1
