ABSTRACT

Use warning labels, alarms, dosimeters, and personal protective equipment to protect users from radiation exposure. When it comes to avoiding harm due to radiation, forewarning is a good first step because radiation poisoning can occur quickly and to a devastating extent before someone is aware or shows symptoms. People can wear radiation suits for protection from some types of radiation where it helps to prevent skin contact with radioactive particles, inhalation of such particles, and the penetration of certain types of low-level radiation. Tracking how much radiation they have been exposed to is key to preventing radiation sickness. A common wearable solution is a dosimeter. These badges have a detection area with a radiation-sensitive film that changes color when exposed to radiation. Some healthcare workers also wear a ring dosimeter if they expect that their hands might be most likely to be exposed to radiation. Thermoluminescent dosimeter rings visibly light up when exposed to radiation.
