ABSTRACT

The worlds that Guadalupe Garcia McCall creates in her literary works mirror her own childhood, adolescence, and journeys while coming of age and later as a professional educator and young adult literature author. Specifically, Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, where McCall was born, appears prominently in her poetry and novels. McCall pursued her studies in theatre arts and English at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. McCall's historical novel Shame the Stars introduces readers to characters who live in South Texas in 1915 and are in pursuit of justice. McCall's history-based narrative further advances the goals of presenting varied perspectives on the making and teaching of history in schools across Texas and the greater United States. McCall provides multiple lenses to view the histories of South Texas, descriptions of ordinary and heroic women, and newspaper sources that document the violence that rises and falls.
