ABSTRACT

Family businesses are present in all sectors and their participation in information technology (IT) is no exception. Honduras is a stereotypical Latin American context in terms of family influence and participation in business activities over time. The POPA Group was founded in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, in 1992 by Rene Portela and Gerardo Pacheco. The name POPA emerged out of the first two letters of the founders' family names. Currently POPA imports and commercializes product lines mainly from Dell, Lexmark, SAP, and Oracle. The current top management team at POPA is composed of members of the founding and second generation of the Pacheco family. In 2013, POPA decided to expand its operations internationally. Nicaragua, a neighboring country, was chosen due to a growing client base outside of Honduras and the awareness that POPA needed to keep up with the globalization of the technological trends.
