ABSTRACT

This chapter describes options for education and professional development for the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO). Education options for CMIOs are highly variable, from ad hoc activities to courses to degrees and fellowships. In recent years, increasing numbers of CMIOs report formal training, as captured in the annual Gartner survey of CMIOs by Vi Shaffer. There are a number of questions for both the established and aspiring CMIO. Probably the most common question for both is whether to seek board certification. From Shaffer's annual surveys, it has been seen that the number of CMIOs who are board-certified has been growing, hitting 77" in 2016 with another 18" planning to pursue certification. After 2022, the only pathway to board certification will be an Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited clinical informatics fellowship. For physicians not pursuing board certification, there are other educational pathways, such as graduate programs and NLM fellowships.
